Soufriere Foundation teams up to clean up Soufriere Infant and Primary School

Hundreds of volunteers teamed up on Saturday, 14th May to join the Soufriere Foundation and the Do Something World team in a High Impact Service Day activity in Soufriere. During the activity, all buildings and workbenches within the Soufriere School Complex- Primary, Infant and Special Education- were completely repainted; the Special Education Centre was wired and partitioned; the corridor of the Infant School tiled; the drains and pathways emptied of soil and garbage and the vegetable garden cleaned of the top layer of soil which was deposited during Hurricane Tomas.

The Soufriere Foundation, local mobilizer for the event is particularly pleased to have teamed up with Do Something World to organize the high impact activity. According to the General Manager of the Soufriere Foundation, Mr. Dominic Alexander, “We are grateful for the level of support we received from the corporate community and want to thank everyone who donated and who joined in this very worthwhile initiative. We urge residents to join in the continued efforts to fully restore all three schools.” He added, “We hope this initiative will help foster a spirit of volunteerism The Soufriere Foundation also facilitated and provided food and refreshments for more than 400 hundred volunteers.

The Do Something World team comprised of over 100 volunteers from the United States who travelled to St. Lucia at their own expense to offer their skills and services. Many other volunteers joined in from around St. Lucia and a similar level of support came from the Soufriere community. Skilled labourers such as contractors, carpenters, tillers, plumbers, gardeners, operators of heavy equipment, all offered their services free of charge. Representatives from local churches, community organizations, business houses and community groups also joined in to make the event a success.

The activity created a buzz through the entire community. The Soufriere Foundation hopes to continue to build on this momentum to mobilize residents to engage in similar projects in the Soufriere region. For its part, the Soufriere Foundation has organized for its staff to complete the painting of the Soufriere Infant School on Saturday, 21st May 2011.
